Charles Clary 
Memento Morididdle Series

Charles Clary was born in 1980 in Morristown, Tennessee. He received his BFA in painting with honors from Middle Tennessee State University and his MFA in painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

He has shown in exhibitions at Galerie Evolution-Pierre Cardin in Paris, France, The Netherlands’ CODA Museum Paper Biennial in 2021, Art of Paper Fair in New York City, and many other international, national, and regional juried, group, solo, and museum exhibitions. Charles has exhibited regionally, nationally, and internationally in numerous solo and group shows, is represented by Paradigm Gallery + Studio in Philadelphia, R02 Gallery in Dallas, Texas, and Patrajdas Contemporary Gallery in Ogden, Utah. Clary currently lives and works in Conway, South Carolina, where he is an Associate Professor of Studio Art and Foundations Coordinator at Coastal Carolina University. 

Clary has been featured in numerous print and Internet interviews including, Create! Magazine, PICKCHUR Magazine, Candyfloss Magazine, This is Colossal, WIRED magazine (US and UK), Hi-Fructose, Beautiful Decay, Bluecanvas Magazine, and This Is Colossal. He has also been featured in publications including 500 Paper Objects, Paper Works, Paper Art, Papercraft 2, PUSH: Paper, and The New Twenties. Clary won Top Prize at the 2016 ArtFields Competition in Lake City, SC, and in 2019 he won both People’s Choice Award for 2D and the Merit Prize at ArtFields.

Matthew Shlian

As a paper engineer, Matthew Shlian’s work is rooted in print media, book arts and commercial design. Beginning with an initial fold, a single action causes a transfer of energy to subsequent folds, which ultimately manifest in drawing and three dimensional forms. He uses many engineering skills to create kinetic sculptures, some of which have led to collaborations with scientists at the University of Michigan. Guided by wonder, his work is made because he cannot visualize its final realization; in this way he comes to understanding through curiosity.

Ashley Catharine Smith
Like Sands Through the Hourglass Series 

Ashley Catharine Smith is a Philadelphia-based artist working in photography, video, and fibers. Combining these mediums, she creates visceral representations of intimacy. Her work constructs moments of closeness with the subjects of her photographs through the printed and embellished image. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States at the Griffin Museum of Photography, Philadelphia’s City Hall, the National Liberty Museum, and the Delaware Art Museum among others. From 2021 through 2022 her work was part of the group exhibition, Textile Art of Today, which traveled to museums in Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.

Shaun Kardinal
Paper Weavings & Embroidered Collage

Shaun Kardinal is a cross-disciplinary visual artist interested in disparate parts forming unified wholes, and the interconnectedness of all things. Born in central California and rooted for many years in Seattle, he immersed himself in the arts community as an exhibiting artist, gallery member, and graphic designer and web developer for many arts organizations—work that led to his current position at Civilization, a design studio serving designers, architects, cultural institutions, and grassroots organizers.

With embroidered postcards and other woven paper ephemera, his ongoing studio practice combines destruction and refortification, as cuts and punctures are renewed in threaded connection, and many like parts merge to reveal new forms. The repetitive coordination of these ubiquitous substrates forms complex and undivided wholes, enacting something larger than the materials. This practice has expanded to include modular installations and collaborative projects, series that always echo his core interest in how diverse elements ultimately form something undivided.

In 2020 he moved to the east coast, renewing his practice in Baltimore and Philadelphia soon after, where he now resides. His work has been exhibited internationally, widely published, and collected extensively, and is represented by J. Rinehart Gallery in Seattle. This Paradigm Gallery exhibition is his first in Philly. Go Birds.

Hyland Mather
Form/Field Series

Hyland Mather is an American artist working across assemblage, abstraction, and installation. Raised in Alaska, he now lives and works between Amsterdam and Portugal. His practice draws directly from the street, where he gathers discarded materials: objects, fragments, and traces of everyday use, and reconfigures them into new forms.

Alongside his studio work, Mather maintains an active presence in public space, creating murals and urban interventions in cities across the United States and Europe. This dual approach informs a practice grounded in observation, reuse, and the shifting life of materials as they move through different contexts.
