From the curator:

Motley Multiples 2 brings together a diverse group of contemporary printmakers from across the United States.  Printmaking possesses a magnetic pull, attracting artists obsessed with the intoxicating smell of an inky slab, the undeniable allure of an ornate hand-cranked press, and the seductive tactility of freshly torn sheets of handmade, deckled-edge paper.

The printmakers gathered here are united by a deep commitment to craft and by their ability to harness the collaborative and transformative potential of this community-oriented art form. This is a display of masterfully cut woodblocks, expertly drawn lithographic stones, and meticulously worked copper plates, each transformed through ink and pressure into editions that celebrate both precision and variation. In an age increasingly defined by disposable automated digital imagery, these handcrafted prints embody something increasingly rare: physical presence, material intelligence, the unmistakable record of the human hand and the enduring community of makers that has sustained printmaking for centuries.

About the Curator // Dennis McNett (aka Wolfbat) is a professional artist and printmaker who has been creating prints for over 30 years. He founded Wolfbat Studios in 2007 as a nomadic DIY workspace encompassing a fully functional printmaking studio, wood shop, and puppet/sculpture shop that has held space in NYC, Houston, Philadelphia, Richmond, Austin, and now Luray, VA.

Dennis earned his MFA in Printmaking in 2004 from Pratt Institute and taught graduate and advanced printmaking courses there for nearly a decade after graduating. He has taught dozens of print-centric workshops at universities, art centers, and museums worldwide. He worked as a master printer for Brand-X Editions in New York City for 4 years creating works for artists such as Chuck Close, Helen Frankenthaler, and Robert Longo that were displayed in notable places like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Pace Gallery NYC. He has participated in print exhibitions, conferences, and fairs internationally and remains an active participant in the print community.

About the Artists

Benjamin Muñoz (b. 1993) is a Dallas-based multi-disciplinary artist and writer whose practice spans painting, installation, and monumental printmaking. Muñoz grew up in the vibrant Chicano culture of Corpus Christi, Texas, which boasts the country's largest Day of the Dead celebration, lowriders shows, and unique food culture. The middle child of three artist brothers, Muñoz found his voice by reflecting on his heritage, upbringing, and current surroundings. His work can be found in the public collections of The Amon Carter Museum of Art,The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art, El Museo del Barrio, The Mexic-Arte Museum, The National Museum of Mexican Art, The Bernard A. Zuckerman Museum of Art, The Blanton Museum of Art,The Library of Congress, and extensive private collections, including the largest collection of Latino art in the world belonging to Gilberto Cardenas. Muñoz has been honored with over 20 solo exhibitions throughout the United States and was included in Soy de Tejas, a traveling survey of Texas-born Latino artists. Muñoz's practice has been featured in The Austin Chronicle, D Magazine, The Dallas Morning News, Glasstire, Pressing Matters Magazine, Sightlines Magazine, and Southwest Contemporary, among others. He has also been a guest on local NPR stations and the Hello, Print Friend podcast. Muñoz is also the interim director of PrintAustin, a month long printmaking festival in Austin, TX and currently works daily in his West Dallas studio when he is not spending time with his wife and three daughters.

Christina Kang is a printmaker, illustrator, and stationary store studio assistant based in Northampton, MA. She received her BFA (2018) from West Virginia University and MFA (2021) from Northern Illinois University in Printmaking. Her work is inspired by data collections, graphs, and personal identity. Recent residencies include Directangle Press (NH), Arrowmont’s 2026 Pentaculum (TN), and St. Michael’s Printshop (St. John’s, NL).  She is a member and studio monitor at Zea Mays Printmaking.

Ericka Walker, b. 1981, in Hartford, Wisconsin, USA and active in Canada. Ericka Walker received a BS from the University of WisconsinMadison, and an MFA from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. She lives and works in Nova Scotia, Canada, where she is an Associate Professor at NSCAD University. Walker’s practice operates on vernacular histories of the graphic arts. Her print works and sitespecific murals subvert the propagandistic function of nostalgia in contemporary culture, disputing the civilizing influence and assumed moral authority of nation building in North America. Walker exhibits widely throughout North America and internationally, and her prints are housed in multiple public and private collections.

Evan Summer is an artist living in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, specializing in prints, drawings and collage. He is a specialist in etching and collagraph, a form of printmaking that uses a collaged printing plate. He has exhibited prints in over 300 exhibitions and has had numerous solo shows including exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery of Art (1999-2000), the Reading Public Museum, Reading, PA (2001and 2005-06), and the China Printmaking Museum (2018). His work is included in many public collections including the National Gallery of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Brooklyn Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the China Printmaking Museum. Evan taught printmaking at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania from 1984 until his retirement in 2019. He received Kutztown University’s two most prestigious awards, the Chambliss Award for scholarship in 2008 and the Wiesenberger Award for teaching in 2011. Much of his imagery is landscape, usually including geometric or architectural forms. These images are unpopulated and are used to create a sense of time and change. His artwork has been influenced by his background in science -- from the use of uncommon materials in printmaking to mathematical perspective to depicting insect specimens. His imagery relates to his continuing interest in nature, science, geometry, and architecture.

Kirsten Flaherty is a Philadelphia-based tattoo artist and printmaker. Her practice explores mortality, decay, and the darker iconography of the natural world through intricately rendered, monochromatic imagery. Drawing from the visual languages of tattooing, heavy metal, and traditional printmaking, Kirsten creates work that is simultaneously visceral and highly observational. Her prints employ dense line-work, layered textures, and dramatic contrasts of light and shadow to transform subjects such as skulls, skeletal remains, weathered landscapes, and organic forms into meditations on impermanence. Across her tattoo and printmaking practices, she moves between bold graphic forms and meticulous detail, finding beauty in imagery that is often associated with death, deterioration, and the macabre.

Liv Johnson’s work focuses on the destabilizing effect of familiar surroundings becoming alien through environmental change. Drawing on depictions of idealized backdrops and curated settings, Johnson's imagery explores disruptions to presumptions of paradise with glimpses of encroaching phenomena. Figures are absent from the scene but they have dressed it. The landscape now asserts itself as the active entity with aggressively verdant vegetation and fermented color. Patterns, both organic and man-made, underpin the unpredictable quality of these events. These works represent a gathering of uncanny settings and intangible currents leading toward a pinnacle in which transformative action can be manifested.  Liv Johnson earned her BA in Art at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and her MFA in Studio Art with an emphasis in Printmaking and Sculpture at Texas Tech University. She now lives in Houston where she is Printmaking Department Head for the Glassell Studio School at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Maclovio Cantú IV (b. 1990) is a Chicano printmaker and educator whose work explores identity, representation, labor, and isolation through heavily metaphorical imagery. Drawing from barrio culture and recurring symbols such as nopales, barbed wire, industrial forms, and masks, his work investigates resilience, cultural memory, and the complexities of contemporary Chicano identity. Cantú’s practice combines expressive mark-making, bold contrasts, and the physicality of relief printmaking, merging drawing and carving into a visceral visual language. Cantú earned his BFA from Indiana University South Bend and his MFA from Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Printmaking at The University of Texas at Tyler.

Nathan NG Catlin is a multi-disciplinary artist who lives and works in Queens, NY. Catlin is interested in the complex narratives that arise from distinctions (culture, views on morality, etc.) that bring people together and separate them. His work is representational and figurative, featuring human interactions that draw inspiration from classical paintings, comic books, and tattoos. Catlin received his BFA in printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute and his MFA from Columbia University. He works in multiple mediums including printmaking, painting, ceramics, stained glass, and mosaic.

Renee Aless Martinez is a Houston-based artist whose work explores identity, emotion, and symbolism through printmaking and drawing. Centering the female figure, she creates richly layered compositions that merge portraiture, ornamentation, and personal mythology. Flowers, fruit, textiles, stars, and botanical forms recur throughout her work as symbolic motifs, constructing visual worlds that examine womanhood, selfhood, memory, and emotional experience. Through bold color, decorative pattern, and stylized figuration, Martinez transforms internal states into vivid, symbolic imagery. Her figures exist between portraiture and archetype, serving as vessels through which themes of vulnerability, desire and transformation are explored.  Martinez received her BFA in Printmaking from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and completed a residency at the London Print Studio in England. Her work has been featured in public art initiatives throughout Houston, including the Houston ReFramed mural collaboration with the City of Houston and the Resiliency in the HeART of Downtown Houston graphic design campaign. In addition to collaborating with local businesses and nonprofits on design projects, Martinez maintains an active studio practice in Houston as a member of Burning Bones Press.

Ryan O’Malley is Professor of Art and Head of Printmaking at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, where he also serves as MFA Program Coordinator. He earned a BFA from the University of South Dakota (2002) and an MFA from Louisiana State University (2005). With nearly 30 years as a printmaker and 20 as an educator, his work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, publications, and collections worldwide, including shows across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. He is a frequent visiting artist at national and international institutions and is cited in Printmaking: A Complete Guide to Materials and Process (2nd ed.) by Fick and Grabowski.

Sean Starwars Born Norwalk, CT. in 1969 and lives in New Orleans with his wife Julie and five children.  He has been making woodcuts for over 35 years. His work can be seen all over the world.

Steve Prince is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, and currently resides in Williamsburg, Virginia.  Prince is the Director of Engagement and Distinguished Artist in Residence at the Muscarelle Museum of Art at William and Mary University. He received his BFA from Xavier University of Louisiana and his MFA in Printmaking and Sculpture from Michigan State University.  He has created several public and private commissions internationally and he has received numerous honors for his art and scholarship including the 2020 International Engage Art Contest Visual Art Grand Prize Winner, and the 2010 Teacher of the Year for the City of Hampton. Prince has shown his art internationally in various solo, group, and juried exhibitions.   He is an accomplished lecturer, workshop conductor, and experiential art program designer, through a variety of media. In 2019 he worked with over 500 people to create a collective art piece focusing on the history of chattel slavery stemming from the first documented Africans arriving on the shores of Point Comfort in 1619.  His project was called “Links” which metaphorically championed the inextricable connections we have as human beings. Prince has also created the award-winning Communal Quilt Project and he is endeavoring to create a mile long patchwork quilt comprised of the stories of an international populace.  Prince spreads a message of hope and renewal to the global community.  His philosophy is derived from the cathartic Jazz funerary tradition in New Orleans; Louisiana called the Dirge and Second Line.  The Dirge represents the everyday issues and pains we confront and endure, whereas the Second Line represents new life, restoration, and a yearning for the eternal while we are still alive.

Tess Doyle is an artist, printmaker and designer. She works primarily in print, graphic design and mixed media. She earned her BFA in printmaking from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. Tess belongs to Burning Bones Press, a community print shop in Houston, where she acts as Press Assistant, as well as leading workshops and events within the Houston arts community. Her work has been shown throughout the Texas region and United States. She is an active member of PrintHouston. She has taught at the Kinder High School for Performing & Visual Arts and The MFAH’s Glassell School of Art, instructing printmaking and 2D design.
