Paradigm Gallery hosts a new artificial intelligence driven exhibit with local tufting business owner Tim Eads and artist Crystal Latimer. Eads co-founded Tuft the World, a West Philly business that sells tufting supplies to crafters around the world. For this exhibit TTW Editions designers used artificial intelligence to program a robotic tufting machine fifteen feet tall and twenty-four feet wide to create beautiful, tufted rugs. The machine can create a piece that is ten by thirteen feet foot, using about 30 pounds of yarn, and it can be completed in one day.

“Since we started Tuft the World in 2018, we’ve been innovating ways to push the boundaries of what is possible with tufting and textiles,” said Eads. “This machine allows us to create one-of-a-kind pieces and this collaboration gives us an opportunity to get really creative and share our work with a wider audience.” This is TTW Editions first time working with artist Crystal Latimer to create collaborative editions. They are creating two pieces together, a 5x7 area rug and a 4x5 wall-hanging. The rest of the exhibit will be pieces created by TTW Editions designers.

“I've long wanted to create tufted rugs and believed that my paintings already held strong aspects of design that would naturally translate to this medium,” said Latimer. “The pieces I designed for the show include cheetahs (symbols of courage, power, and grace) as well as tigers (strength, focus). Also of appreciation, the two tigers depicted in one of the pieces are of a yin/yang nature, symbolizing feminine and masculine energy.”

Latimer has been interested in tufting since 2020 when she came across Eads’ Tuft the World Instagram account. “It's a full circle moment for me,’ said Latimer. “I’ve allowed tufting to influence my paintings in many ways, so this is a chance for those tufting dreams to finally come true.” Eads has been creating tufted pieces since 2018 and Latimer has exhibited her previous work at the Paradigm Gallery, in London, and Colorado. The exhibit runs from July 7 – July 30 at Paradigm Gallery, 12 N 3rd St, Philadelphia, PA 19106.

About Tuft the World

Tuft the World was established in 2018 by Tiernan Alexander and Tim Eads, Texas-born artists and business owners living and working in West Philadelphia. The company was founded to provide tufters with the high-quality tools, materials, and instruction they need to make their own tufting projects. Tiernan and Tim’s collective experience as crafters and educators, as well as their uniquely creative approach to art and life, inspire their mission to make the craft of tufting accessible to a broad audience, while staying true to their values of equity and sustainability.
