"The Long Way Home" works by Katherine Fraser
Posted on October 01 2014
In our memories we are constantly collecting images and experiences that tell the story of who we are. We are innocent curators of the chaos around us. Certain stories we know well and retell often, others recur to us in flashes of self-awareness, so that our sense of origin is an ever evolving narrative. Sometimes written off as simply "nostalgia," this longing for our past is not a desire to return to it, it's a yearning to better understand ourselves.
The Long Way Home captures the feeling that our past is never far, yet just beyond reach. The mutable nature of memory means that our vision of it constantly evolves. We group memories by relevance rather than sequence, and transform them into a story that reveals where we came from, helping to illuminate the path ahead.
