Kyle Montgomery's Crystal Mary series

Kyle Montgomery's dazzling Crystal Mary series is back at Paradigm! His ethereal works combine Catholic iconography and new-age spirituality and address notions of reincarnation, protection, rebirth, and the afterlife. At first glance, Montgomery’s sculptures look like typical “Virgin Mary” statuettes, with the figure in different positions of prayer or with her arms outstretched. Up close, however, a mass of crystals pours out from inside her robe in place of Mary’s face and torso.

Nazeer Sabree's TRF-98 series

Nazeer Sabree's "TRF-98" (Transgenerational Rorschach Fragments-1998) Series continues the dialogue from the False Face series from a closer vantage point.

"What are the physiological consequences of what's going on behind the scenes—the battles that people don't see—that we fight? This innovative method evaluates cultural, genealogical, and personal issues critically. The focus is on the function of black bodies and the pursuit of healing when dealing with the internal effects of trauma. New techniques and materials, such as digital collages intertwined with family photo archives and repurposed materials, are used to investigate the elusive nature of transgenerational trauma. Collaging from an amalgamation of profoundly personal yet culturally relatable moments lets me display the beauty of the black family and our customs. Exploring these moments allows me to demonstrate joy and the juxtaposition of other adversities hidden throughout our culture and the nuances we face. In this work, the use of black and white alludes to the idea that some people believe trauma is monochromatic when, in fact, it is a greyscale spectrum." –Nazeer Sabree

This release is part of a larger celebration with the Philadelphia Museum of Art. We are honored to publicly share the good news that the Philadelphia Museum of Art has acquired Nazeer Sabree’s The Place of Storms (2023) from Paradigm Gallery + Studio. The work is a continuation of Sabree’s "False Face" series, featuring thoughtful portraits and collages celebrating collective identity and cultural archives. André Schulze's Pixelated Series

André Schulze (1982) is an artist and painting conservator from Dresden, Germany who specializes in the restoration and remodeling of old paintings. He studied fine arts at Dresden University of Fine Arts. The artist uses old paintings, often saved from disposal, found in antique and thrift stores or given to him by collectors. The artist thoroughly restores the frequently badly damaged old paintings before he continues to layer them with his own painted contemporary imagery, mixing in subtle humor and attention to detail. Through the restoration of the artworks and his modern interpretation, he sees his process as a second life for forgotten artworks. From the conscious reuse of materials to the renewed chance at a captive audience for the artwork, the artist relocates the worlds in the paintings to our present moment in layers that extend beyond the painted surface.

About Paradigm Gallery + Studio
Paradigm Gallery + Studio® was established in 2010 by co-founders and curators, Jason Chen and Sara McCorriston. The gallery exhibits meaningful, process-intense contemporary artwork by emerging and mid-career artists from around the world, with a focus on Philadelphia. In 2023, Paradigm moved locations and opened its new 5-story, 7,000 sq. ft. home, The Paradigm Arts Building, in Old City, Philadelphia. Open to the public, the building boasts multiple floors of exhibition space, integrated in-house design and printmaking, a dedicated events floor, and art advisory offices. With this, Chen and McCorriston expanded their vision for the greater Philadelphia arts community. The gallery is at the heart of this vision, anchoring Paradigm’s overall mission of increasing access to the commercial art world, supporting artists and advancing their careers, and collaborating with like-minded partners to build a more equitable, sustainable arts economy for all.
