Studio Visit with Kelly Kozma: Confetti Crackle Pop Preview

Posted on May 20 2015

Through the cycle of growing there is inevitably the act of reflection on the past. The bright palette used throughout “Confetti Crackle Pop” represents a desired energy, gusto, and happiness that hinges on nostalgia. It’s reminiscent of playing make believe and being carefree. It begs you to use your imagination and break out your inner child. While it can be easy to forget these sensibilities, these works urge you to ignite them.

This body of work came out of my own deconstruction. Loss, suffering, illness. This exhibition tells the story of how I put myself back together, stitch-by-stitch.

Confetti Crackle Pop features an array of mixed media techniques, including hand embroidery, painting, and collage, creating a body of work that shows the growth and transition that occurs in the passing of time. With every individual stitch made, knot tied or circle punched, a new notch is added to my timeline. Because of the meticulous nature and time consuming aspect involved in developing each piece, it feels as though time is physically being marked.

In many of the pieces, materials are deconstructed and put back together to generate a sense of control and stability. Using the technique of hand stitching to do so, equates quite literally to fixing something and making it stronger. In turn a sense of unity and connectedness is also achieved. Another part of the process involves rolling dice to determine which colors are used. The randomness and organic feel generated from this, alongside the otherwise extremely precise process, creates a balance within the work.

There are also many instances where prints of original pieces get sewn into, painted over, and collaged on top of. Each work is unique, but there are elements still visible from the one that came before. The work develops new generations of itself, which also shows movement through time.
