“Before leaving for Ireland, a friend told me to make sure to travel outside of Dublin, and see more of the country. One of the trips I made took me to the beautiful village of Howth. It has long, stretching views with clear blue water where you can see the seals swimming between the boats in the harbour. On my last day I also visited the Wicklow Mountains, which was equally impressive. The beautiful colours of the natural scenery really stood out for me. The thing that made the biggest impression on me was the painting ‘Before the Start’ by Jack B. Yeats,  which I saw at the National Gallery of Ireland.

The painting by Yeats only uses very few subtle suggestions of space, while putting together a compelling story in one painting. This particular painting ‘Before The Start’ is about horse racing, a subject Yeats often captured in his paintings. At the same time, in almost every place I had lunch or a beer the horse races where shown on the television. It’s completely integrated in the cultural heritage of Ireland. What really struck me was how the horse is the show piece, but at the same time in almost  every race I watched, one of the horses stumbles and falls over an obstacle. This juxtaposition actually really resonates with my work, the intersection between human interaction and failure ”
