“Going into the experience, I really didn’t want to arrive with any pre-conceptions. I had done some research ahead of time but I wanted to allow for the environment to make an influence instead of looking for one.

What I found myself being most drawn to while I was there was the personality you could find around the towns. Most of the homes and buildings feature a distinct color combination from one another which creates a really beautiful conversation of palette throughout the cities and towns. I spent a lot of time wandering around and photographing different color combinations and how they related to one another. I also found there were some really poetic moments in the messages scrawled around. One of my favorites was a spray painted piece of plywood that read, “Triste Mas No Boa” which translates to “sad but good.” It felt like there was a lot of character to see and never felt like it was trying to be anything it didn’t need to be.

The print is based on the forms from one of the original wire works created during the residency, “Começos” which from Portuguese translates to “Beginnings”. Beginnings has been a theme that keeps resurfacing for me and something that I try to embrace. It’s a term that can lean into a matter of perspective but I like to think about it as not a starting point but where something will lead. Within my work the residency was a good opportunity for me to unplug and experiment in some different ways, but I think the sentiment also felt like it translated well to that specific time at the Holdout.”
