Amory Abbott

Amory Abbott, MFA, is an American visual artist, author, and Professor of Art, living in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he teaches illustration at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. He is the cofounder and editor of Fire Season, a biennial visual and literary publication exploring the prevalence of wildfire in western Canada, and founder of Cauldron Books & Comics, publishing vanguard art books, comics, and graphic novels. Amory’s studio drawing practice explores the West’s sordid history with landscape, using thematic visual tropes found in fantasy, metal music, and the esoteric to characterize the heightened drama associated with climate crisis and ecological cataclysm. Amory also hosts an online journal called Old-Growth Gothic, a repository for his writing practice. His recent research has landed him in artist residencies in rural New Mexico, National Parks in Montana and Washington, and along the northwest coast of Ireland. Amory holds a MFA in Visual Studies from Pacific Northwest College of Art (2016), and a BFA in Illustration from Herron School of Art and Design (2004). He has taught in the Illustration department at Emily Carr University of Art + Design since 2017, and in 2022 was awarded tenure, a rank change to Associate Professor, and the position of Assistant Dean, Illustration. In 2025 Amory was appointed interim Dean of the Faculty of Art at Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

Artist Statement
My interest in landscape art began upon my arrival in the Pacific Northwest in 2014. The views of volcanic mountains, river gorges, and ancient forests first introduced me to the concept of “Aesthetic Arrest” – a term coined by James Joyce describing the emotional state of stillness we enter when perceiving profound beauty. To live in the Pacific Northwest had always been a dream of mine, being drawn here by the mountains, trees, and ocean. The dark and dramatic coastal rainforest landscape was something I identified with and found inspiration from, and so it became the subject of much of my art practice. The transition from rural America to the multicultural society of Vancouver brought a complexity to my life that mirrored the intricate ecological systems of the landscape here. Everything was amplified, carried more meaning, revealed more consequence. There’s a depth and mystery to a landscape–something still to be revealed, something not yet totally knowable–that I sought to capture in my work that spoke to the increasing complexities of our modern lives. That complexity began to inform the technical, material, and conceptual approach to my art practice. As I became more familiar with the social, political, and biological concerns of the land around me, my research shifted toward global ecological crisis, forest management, and fire succession.

View available work from Amory Abbott below.

28.5"h × 20.5"w framed

Charcoal on Stonehenge 250 gsm paper

2021

signed en verso
