This year Paradigm Gallery has teamed up with art curator and artist residency travel planner Jeroen Smeets of The Jaunt.  We’re looking forward to presenting the artwork by the artists of their 2020 “Summer Camp” program opening* on October 23, 2020 and remaining on view through November 21, 2020.

"For this year’s edition of our Summer Camp, we invited four artists to come and stay with us at Camp Wandawega in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we chose to curate local artists to keep travel to a minimum. From Chicago, we invited Kelly Knaga and David Heo, and out of Detroit, we invited Bakpak Durden and Ellen Rutt. Cody Tumblin, artist and chef, was cooking up delicious meals for the artists together with his wife, and as such played an important role in the group dynamic. Over the course of 4 days, the artists explored the area together and had the opportunity to escape the city and be in the midst of nature amongst kindred spirits."

*Due to COVID-19, “In Isolation” will be available for viewing by appointment only or on https://www.paradigmarts.org/ until further notice. These policies are dependent on the current policies of the CDC, WHO and the Governor and Mayor’s offices.

Paradigm Gallery’s number one priority is the safety and wellness of their visitors. For live updates on the exhibition and appointments, please visit the Paradigm website and socials. For any questions on Paradigm’s current policies, please email info@paradigm-gallery.com.

About The Jaunt
The Jaunt creates opportunities and possibilities for artists. The project allows artists to travel the world and find inspiration – not just during the trip, but lasting inspiration that hopefully permeates their entire artistic practice. The Jaunt’s mission is to catalyze progress and feed fresh insight into the creative process of our artists. The first step in this process is taking the artist out of their comfort zone and allowing them to experience completely new surroundings.

The concept is simple: we find an artist and send them on a trip to anywhere in the world that they have never been be- fore. The artist then soaks up all of the local impressions and inspirations at their destination. From freshly brewed local coffee to small boutiques, neoclassical architecture, over- crowded tourist sights or whatever else comes across their path. The artists also document their adventures and impressions in a travel blog that can be followed online, which gives even more insight into the artist’s perspective. Each destination and artist is different, making each trip truly unique.

After they return home from the trip, the artist channels all of the impressions into an artwork that is reproduced as a limited edition and hand pulled, screen print. It’s a unique travel document in the form of an artwork. But while you know which artist is going to which location, our limited-edition screen prints are sold before the artwork has been created. This allows you to contribute to making the inspiration possible, while experiencing the creative process from up close.

Ellen Rutt
Ellen Rutt
With an abstract vocabulary of shapes, textures, and primary colours, Ellen Rutt creates her own visual language through mixed-media paintings, murals, installations and a variety of wearables. Through her work Ellen tells a symbolic narrative of connectivity and dissonance, through which she questions the ways we create meaning from non-sense. Her work often features an immersive, performative quality, encouraging the participation of both artist and audience.

Kelly Knaga
Kelly Knaga
In her work, Kelly Knaga investigates the natural and digital landscapes through the play of shape, image, color, line and pattern. Her work utilises historical and sometimes fictional references through anthropological studies, mapmaking and storytelling. Working from Chicago, she combines her art practice with being the Director of Design Education at Indiana University Northwest, and several other design organisations in Chicago.

Bakpak Durden
With a primary focus on the human figure, Bakpak Durden, uses a range of mediums including oil and acrylic paint, graphite and photography to create their hyperrealistic and conceptual style. With an eye for detail and emotion their engaging subjects shine a spotlight on human feelings, moods and experiences. Outside of the studio, Bakpak takes their work into the public art realm through a series of murals, and focuses on continuing their work within community, queer, and mental health advocacy.

David Heo
Having recently been named as part of Chicago’s next generation of Image Makers, David Heo is a young upcoming artist hailing from the city of Chicago. In his works, David utilises the symbology inherent to historical paintings and illustrations of mythology and folklore. Utilising history to create an exciting mix of grand mythical meta narratives to serene frames of domestic daily life. Depictions of horses, dogs and tigers are typologies of the people he encounters and interacts with in the night life.

Cody Tumblin
Cody Tumblin
Cody Tumblin (b. 1991 Nashville, TN) is a painter, cook, and occasional writer who lives and works in Chicago, IL. His paintings depict both literal and figurative landscapes of longing, desire, memory, and loss, featuring densely collaged surfaces, sewn together from dyed and painted remnants. He was recently named a Hopper Prize Finalist and a Newcity 2020 Breakout Artist. His work has been published in Art Maze, Vast Magazine, Comp, and Hunted Projects.
